Today, Monday 26 October 2026, northern softwood is priced attractively. In early October, Western SPF 2×4 traded at $464 per 1,000 board feet, while Southern Yellow Pine was $495. That means SYP now carries a $31 premium over SPF, compared with a $78 discount a year earlier.
US duties on Canadian softwood lumber now total 34.75%, made up of 24.75% anti-dumping and countervailing duties plus a separate 10% tariff. Canadian lumber output also fell 8.6% in July from the previous month.
For Taiga Forest Wood customers outside the US, these duties do not apply to most destinations. Spruce, pine and SPF of neutral origin, shipped by flexible routes, can avoid tariff-driven cost spikes.
Example: On $464 per 1,000 board feet, a 34.75% duty adds about $161. That would take the cost to roughly $625 for a US importer, while a buyer in a non-US market pays about $464 before freight (illustrative calculation).
Advice for partners: Agree on origin documents, grading and routing at contract stage, so there are no surprises at port.
The honest caution: Trade rules and freight rates can change fast, especially with Gulf shipping disrupted. Always reconfirm before shipment.
